Ambulance Crash In Doddridge County Sends Three to Hospital

An ambulance crash that occurred just after 11 p.m. on Monday, May 20, 2013, sent three people to local hospitals.  The crash occurred on Route 50 in Doddridge County near Arnold's Creek.

Police reports indicate that the driver was traveling toward Parkersburg when the ambulance ran off the road, hit a guard rail, and crashed into a ravine.  According to police, the driver admitted he had fallen asleep while driving.

The passenger in the ambulance was taken to United Hospital Center in Bridgeport, WV, while the EMT passenger was transported by Air Evac Lifeteam to Ruby Memorial Hospital.

Drowsy driving is a serious problem that causes thousands of automobile crashes a year.  A typical crash related to sleepiness has the following characteristics:

  • The crash is usually serious
  • The crash occurrs during late night or early morning
  • A single vehicle usually leaves the roadway
  • The crash typically occurs on a high speed road

Sleep loss, using sedatives, and consumption of alcohol are risks of sleep-related crashes.  To prevent dowsy driving, people should plan to obtain plenty of sleep prior to driving long distances, don't drink alcohol prior to driving, limit driving between midnight and six a.m.  Taking a short nap and consuming caffeine equivalent to two cups of coffee can make a short term difference in alertness while driving.
