Pedestrian Safety Tips for West Virginians

Safety is always a top priority.  As the weather gets nicer and people begin doing more outdoor activities, its important to keep pedestrians in mind.  A pediestrian, as defined by the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration and for the purposes of this post, is any person on foot, walking, running, jogging, hiking, sitting, or lying down who is involved in a motor vehicle traffic crash.  In 2010, 4,280 pedestrians were killed and an estimated 70,000 were injured in traffic crashes.  (Source: National Highway Traffic Safety Administration).  Also, in 2010, pedestrian deaths accounted for 13 percent of all traffic fatalities and made up 3 percent of all people injured in traffic crashes.

According to studies by the Centers for Disease Control, male pedestrians are more likely to die or be injured in pedestrian related traffic crashes; teen and young adult pedestrians are more likely to be treated in emergency departments for crash-related injuries compared to any other age group; and the rate of pedestrian death generally increases with age.  As pedestrians, children tend to be at even great risk of injury or death in pedestrian related traffic crashes due to their size, inability to properly evaulate speed and distances, and due to a lack of experience with traffic rules.

As you get outside on those nice spring days for a walk, keep these safety tips in mind:

  • Cross the street at a designated crosswalk
  • Be careful at intersections where drivers may fail to yeild the right of way to pedestrians while turning onto another street
  • Increase your visibility at night by carrying a flashlight and wearing reflective clothing.
  • Its safest to walk on a sidewalk, but if you must walk in the street, walk facing traffic.
