Fall Driving Safety Tips

Fog, sun glare, frost, and wet leaves are a few driving hazards that drivers will experience this fall. As leaves start to fall from trees, wet leaves on roadways can be very slick. Wet leaves can also make it difficult to see traffic lines and pavement markers. Drivers should slow down on leaf-covered roadways to assist in minimizing a car accident.

Sun glare can be problematic during sunset and sunrise, often coinciding with rush hour. Glare from the sun on the horizon can blind a driver and cause an unexpected traffic slowdown.

Other fall hazards include fog and frost. When driving in fog, drivers should use low beam headlights to reduce glare. In foggy areas, headlight use will enhance your visibility as well as provide other drivers with the ability to see your vehicle.

Morning frost and icy spots can also cause problems as temperatures overnight drop toward freezing. Motorists should be particularly aware of road conditions on bridges, overpasses, and shaded areas on roadways where icy spots can form on pavement. Motorists should also clear their vehicles' windows of frost before travel.

Keep these tips in mind for a safer driving experience this fall:

· Check your headlights, taillights, and turn signals to ensure they are working properly since darkness is a part of your commute.

· Be sure you have tires with sufficient tread depth in case of an early snow.

· Increase your following distance in severe weather, at dusk and dawn and when in an area with wet leaves.

· Have your vehicle's heating and wiper systems checked to ensure they are working properly.
