Marion County ATV Accident Leaves One Dead

One person was killed over the weekend in an All Terrain Vehicle Accident outside of Mannington, West Virginia, in Marion County. According to local reports, around two o'clock on Saturday, July 14, 2014, an ATV accident occurred after an ATV rolled on the top of a hill on Mods Run Road. Health net responded to the scene but no one was life flighted to the hospital. Reports indicate that three people were involved in the accident and one person was killed. The Marion County Sheriff's Department is investigating the matter.

This is high point of "crunch time" for ATV riders-a critical period when riding season and ATV-related incidents are at their peaks. ATVs can be enjoyable, but also can be extremely dangerous. ATVs are designed to be driven off-road and can be difficult to control on paved surfaces. When driven on paved surfaces, ATVs have a higher risk of overturning or colliding with vehicles.

Due to their dangerous nature, children under the age of 16 should never ride ATVs. More than 90 percent of ATV related injuries involving children occur due to a lack of developmental skills needed to maneuver the ATVs. If a child under 16 does wish to ride an ATV, an age-appropriate youth model, which travels at lower speeds, should be utilized.

When riding an ATV, always keep the following safety tips in mind:

· Don't drive an ATV on a paved surface road.

· Always wear a helmet and other protective gear such as long pants, gloves, and eye protection.

· Take a safety course on the safe operation of ATVs

· Do not allow a child under 16 to operate or ride an adult ATV

· Do not drive ATVs with a passenger

ATV accidents can present difficulties when attempting to make an insurance claim after the wreck. Many insurance companies will deny coverage or have attempted to make very narrow exceptions for coverage involving ATV accidents. An attorney experienced in handling ATV claims can best assist you in seeking insurance coverage after an ATV accident.
