Hunting Safety

The West Virginia Division of Natural Resources is asking hunters to take extra precautions, especially during the two week buck firearm season. Hunters need to be careful when using tree stands. Tree stand accidents are the most common accidents for hunters, according to DNR chief Col. Jerry Jenkins. One in three hunters who use tree stands will suffer a fall. Falling from these heights often cause serious injuries and can lead to death. Below are some tips on how to keep safe during hunting season.

  • Always let someone know when you are hunting and where you are going in case something happens.
  • Know how to properly assemble your tree stand. If it is permanent, be sure the check it thoroughly each year.
  • When climbing into your tree stand, never carry a loaded firearm. Climb to the stand, harness yourself to it and pull your gear up with a rope.
  • Have a plan in case you fall. Always bring a whistle and cell phone when hunting.

If you're hunting this season, use extra precautions to keep yourself and friends safe.

When hunting, or preparing for your day, assume every gun is loaded and treat it as such. Wear hunter orange to help others identify you. Deer cannot tell red or orange from green. Hunters who wear hunter orange are 7 times less likely to be shot on accident when in the woods.

If you plan to hunt this season, be sure to keep these tips in mind when going out. If you've been injured in a hunting accident or by a faulty tree stand, call one of our attorneys today for a free consultation.
