Car accident fatalities fall to record lows

In 2014, approximately 35,400 people were killed as a result of car accidents. This means that the annual mileage death rate dropped to 1.18 deaths per 100 million miles traveled. According to the National Safety Council, the estimated annual mileage death matches the lowest preliminary estimates on record for the National Safety Council.

The 2014 numbers suggest an increase of less than 50 deaths compared to 2013 numbers. Accident related injuries requiring medical treatment are estimated to be around 4.3 million.

According to National Safety Council president, Debora A.P. Hersman, almost 100 people die every day in completely preventable car accidents. In order to prevent these deaths, it is important that motorists make better choices when it comes to safety behind the wheel.

When driving, keep these safety tips in mind to help prevent a car accident:

· Don't use electronic devices behind the wheel; if you must use an electronic device use a hands free device;

· Make sure to wear your seatbelt, even when traveling short distances;

· Never drive when fatigued and plan regular rest stops;

· Always secure children in size appropriate safety restraints;

· Don't drink and drive.

Driver safety is a major component of preventing car crashes. In addition to the major toll a car accident can take in human injury and loss, car accidents also create major damages to society. The estimated cost of motor vehicle deaths, injuries, and property damage in 2014 was $288.9 billion in the United States.
