Snowy Road Conditions a Reminder to Use Care When Driving

Most of us in North Central West Virginia woke up to our first snow fall of the winter season. Although the snow was a dusting and did not accumulate much, it still caused traffic delays and accidents. Local news outlets reported that icy conditions caused at least four accidents on Interstate 79 between Clarksburg and the Lewis County Line. One accident caused three people to be taken to the hospital, while another caused a water truck to roll over.

Winter weather presents a number of challenges as a driver and to your car. Cold weather can test your car's mechanical abilities and your abilities as a driver. Ice, snow, and cold weather each present different difficulties in operating a motor vehicle on the road. Because of the difficulties winter presents, it is always important to be prepared for winter weather. Here are some suggestions to prepare for winter driving:

- If your car needs serviced, get it done now.

- Be sure that your tire pressure is accurate so you don't jeopardize your tires or your car's handling.

- Make sure your battery is charged.

- Check your cooling system and make certain that the antifreeze in your car will work for winter temperatures.

- Keep your gas tank full in case you are stranded on the road.

- Make sure your windshield washer fluid reservoir is full.

- Keep some basic supplies like a blanket, snowbrush, and ice scraper in your car.

- Always driver slowly in winter weather

Winter weather can be enjoyable, but it can also be treacherous. Be smart when driving and take it slow to prevent car accidents and injuries.
