Be safe after the Christmas Party

Posted in Car accident,Uncategorized on December 17, 2013

The Holidays are often a joyous time for many Americans as we get to reunite with friends, relatives, and loved ones. During this festive time, there are many celebrations that may involve alcohol. While this is often a happy time of year, the irresponsible use of alcohol, especially when combined with driving on the roadways, can easily turn into tragedy.

An average of 45 people died each day during the holiday season based upon statistics reported from 2001 to 2005 by the United States Department of Transportation. The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) estimates that there is one death from an alcohol-related collision approximately every forty-eight (48) minutes. Moreover, Mothers Against Drunk Driving (MADD) reports that deaths from drinking and driving around the holidays are blamed for about fifty-two percent (52%) of fatal vehicle collisions on Christmas and fifty-seven percent (57%) on New Year’s compared to a rate of forty-one percent (41%) for the entire year.

As we all go about our holiday plans, or at any time of year, here are some simple tips to help keep the roadways safe:

· Plan ahead. Always designate a non-drinking driver before any holiday party or celebration begins and stick with the plan.

· Take the keys. Don’t let friends or other party-goers drive impaired.

· Use Public Transportation or Call a Cab. If you are alone, or if no wants to be the designated non-drinking driver, there are usually other forms of transportation available.

· Be a helpful host. If you’re hosting a party this holiday season, remind your guests to plan ahead and designate their sober driver; offer alcohol-free beverages; and make sure all of your guests leave with a sober driver or have a safe way to get home.
