Survey indicates more older drivers are distracted by smartphones

Distracted driving. When those two words cross most people's minds, an image of a young person behind the wheel, looking down and texting a friend comes to mind. For most of us, distracted driving is often associated with younger drivers and, for good reason. However, a recent survey highlighted in the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette last week indicates that distracted driving for drivers over 30 is a growing safety concern.

The number of drivers between ages 30 and 39 who own smartphones has increased from 60 percent to 86 percent in the past two years alone. This increase matches the percentage of 18 to 29 year olds who own smartphones.

Distracted driving has risen among older individuals, in part because ownership has increased. Smartphone ownership among 40 to 49 year olds grew from 47 percent in 2011 to 82 percent this year. Of those aged 50 to 64, the percentage rose from 44 percent to 64 percent.

Forty-one states, including West Virginia, have banned texting while driving in an effort to reduce distracted driving related car wrecks.

In an effort to reduced distracted driving car wrecks, be sure to use a hands-free device if you must make a call while driving. Further, not only is it illegal in the State of West Virginia for an individual to text while driving, it is very dangerous.

Distracted driving is a major cause of car accidents each year. If you or a loved one has been injured because of a distracted driver, the attorneys at the Manchin Injury Law Group can help. We are committed to the safety of those in our community and for people throughout West Virginia and actively discuss the dangers of distracted driving throughout our community.
