In 2018 a study by the Emory Eye Center found that chronic exposure to the drug Elmiron causes unique pigmentary maculopathy (eye damage). Recently, long term users of the drug have brought lawsuits alleging that chronic use has led to vision problems.

What Is Elmiron?

Elmiron is the popular brand name for the drug pentosan-polysulfate-sodium.  Elmiron is used for the treatment of interstitial-cystitis (IC). IC is a chronic condition that causes bladder pressure, pain, and frequent urination. IC is a common condition that affects men and women, women being more susceptible to IC. It is currently the only oral drug approved to treat  pain and discomfort associated with IC.

How Does Elmiron Work?

Researchers believe that the drug works by protecting the bladder from irritants in the urine. IC causes damage to the bladder wall’s protective lining, which allows for irritating bacteria in the urine to cause pain and inflammation. Pentosan-Polysulfate-Sodium creates a protective barrier to the bladder wall to prevent these irritants, and provide relief of symptoms.
