A recent study has found a link between Viagra and melanoma. Researchers recently discovered that Viagra users were significantly more likely to be diagnosed with Melanoma than nonusers. Even men who have only taken Viagra once have an increased risk for melanoma.
The study, conducted by Harvard School of Public Health has shown a link between Melanoma risk and Sildenafil (Viagra and Pfizer). The study was conducted on 26,000 men. Their sexual health, use of Viagra, history of sun exposure, risks of skin cancer, and history of moles was taken into consideration during the study. At the study’s conclusion, the researchers identified 142 Melanoma, 580 squamous cell carcinoma, and 3,030 basal cell carcinoma cases. Researchers found that Viagra increases the risk for Melanoma so much that further research and studies were recommended. Viagra affects the same genetics that allows melanoma to be more invasive and nearly doubles the risks. Viagra inhibits phosphodiestererase 5A. It also inhibits melanin synthesis, which occurs in melanocytes. Melanoma develops from melanocytes. The increased production of melanin increases the chances of Melanoma.
There are nearly 76,000 new cases of melanoma each year; 9,000 cases resulting in death, according to the National Cancer Institute. Melanoma is the deadliest form of skin cancer. Over-exposure to UV rays is generally the cause to the disease. Any moles that are asymmetrical, have irregular borders, unusual colors, evolve around time, and are greater than a quarter of an inch should be looked at by a physician. If diagnosed early, it can be removed by a biopsy. If not caught early, it can spread to other parts of the body.
A defective drug can be an over-the-counter medication or a prescription that causes injuries, whether they are physical, emotional, or psychological. These injuries are often the result because of insufficient labeling. It is the manufacturer’s responsibility to properly label and make sure any consumers are fully aware of any risks. Many people think just because a drug has FDA approval, it is safe for everyone, which isn’t always the case.
