Xarelto is an anticoagulant (blood thinner) drug used to treat patients at risk of deep vein thrombosis and blood clots. Xarelto is often prescribed to patients who have undergone knee and/or hip replacements. In November 2011, the FDA approved Xarelto use for the purpose of treating a specific type of irregular heartbeat. Additionally, Xarelto was expected to act as a replacement for the blood thinner warfarin, with professed advantages of a reduced need for patient monitoring. While Xarelto did have fewer food and drug interactions than warfarin, it cost substantially greater.

Xarelto has been linked to serious side effects including gastrointestinal bleeding, brain bleed, internal bleeding and death. Currently, the manufacturers of Xarelto are being sued throughout the country by people who have suffered severe, uncontrolled internal bleeding and who, as a result suffer permanent injuries or death. The lawsuits allege that the manufactures of Xarelto knew of this potential side effect and knew there was no treatment for this side effect but failed to notify and warn patients of this issue.
