September is National Preparedness Month!

We've all heard "Disasters don't plan ahead. You Can" and with the recent hurricanes hitting the United States, now, more than ever is a time to make sure you and your family are prepared for a natural disaster. Everyone should take action this month to prepare for when a disaster strikes.

Homeowner holiday safety

The holiday season calls for gift giving, family get-togethers and festive decorations. With all the fun going on, it's easy to let the Christmas spirit distract you from all the potential safety hazards that are sure to put a damper on your celebrations. Here are a few tips to keep you and your family safe this season:

Winter Driving

With winter approaching, drivers need to take extra caution when driving in winter weather. It's important to do a check up for your vehicle before the weather gets too bad. It is recommended that drivers check the tire pressure when temperatures start to drop as tire pressure goes down when outside temperatures decrease. The battery and charging system also needs to be up to fully functioning for the winter. Because it takes more power to get the engine started in the winter than it does in the summer your car's battery needs to be charged to prevent ignition problems.

Is Artificial Turf Safe?

New studies show that artificial turf could be linked to cancer. The turf, made from old tires, may contain chemicals that cause cancer in athletes who play on artificial turf often. Artificial grass was first invented in 1964 as synthetic grass laid on concrete. During the early 2000s, a better form was developed. Crumb rubber was being placed between the fake blades of grass, making a softer landing surface.

Is your child in the right car seat?

September 14th-20th is National Child Passenger Safety Week. Motor vehicle accidents are the number 1 cause of death in children 12 years and younger. Most of the time death and serious injuries can be prevented by using the correct car seat for your child. Children ages 2-5 years old that use a seat belt before they are big enough are four times more likely to suffer a serious head injury compared to children in a proper car seat.

Are you prepared in the event of an emergency?

September is National Preparedness Month. If you and your family have not already taken the time to make a plan for when disaster strikes, now is the time to do it. Emergencies can happen at any time, big or small. Having a plan is not just for the home, but for the workplace and community as well. Schedule a day for your family, co-workers, and neighbors to make an emergency plan for when disaster strikes.
