A new study from the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety concluded that West Virginia has the highest rate of ATV deaths on public roads throughout the nation. The study concluded that between 2007 and 2011, rider deaths on public roads throughout the nation totaled 1,701.
While West Virginia led the nation in on-public-road fatalities, West Virginia ranks third in total fatal wrecks at 96, behind Kentucky and Pennsylvania.
The study also found that men over the age of 16 were more likely to die in crashes and that in fatal crashes, few people wore helmets and many were impaired by alcohol.
In West Virginia, ATVs and UTVs offer recreation, transportation and utility to many of our state’s residents. However, ATVs and UTVs can be very dangerous, especially when riding without a helmet and when riding on hard surfaces.
To ensure that your next ride is as safe as it is enjoyable, follow these tips:
· Always wear a DOT-compliant helmet
· Never ride under the influence of drugs or alcohol
· Ride an ATV that is age-appropriate
· Remember that in West Virginia, ATV operators under 18 are required to wear a helmet and are required to attend an ATV operator’s course.
As this most recent study shows, ATV accidents often lead to serious injuries or fatalities. If you or a loved one has been injured as a result of an ATV wreck, it is important to consult with an experienced ATV attorney soon. Factual circumstances will need to be reviewed, ATV ownership and insurance will need to be examined and often, other areas of insurance coverage will need to be explored.
