If your home has a sump pump in the basement to keep groundwater out, it’s a good idea to test your pump before leaving for a long period of time. If it isn’t working, make sure it’s plugged in, not clogged, and that the breaker is working properly. You may also want to add a back-up battery to your sump pump incase the power goes out during a heavy rainstorm.
Guard your home against intruders. When planning a vacation for an extended period, don’t announce to the world on social media that you will be away from your home. This is an invitation to intruders. Ensure all locks are working properly before you leave. Make sure all doors and windows are locked. Creating the illusion that someone is home can also help deter intruders. You can leave a tv, stereo, or interior lights on with a timer. Leave exterior lighting on or use a motion sensor for outdoor lighting.
When going on a long trip, make sure your car is loaded with a safety kit in the event of an emergency. Emergencies can happen when it’s least expected so it’s best to be prepared. Here are some things to keep in your emergency kit: charged cell phone, first-aid kit, fire extinguisher, warning triangles, tire gauge, tire sealant, jumper cables, flashlight, batteries, tow rope, Swiss Army Knife, drinking water, blankets, and a snow shovel (if travelling during winter months). These are just a few things to keep in mind when packing your emergency kit.
It’s better to be prepared than be stuck in an emergency or come home to damage to your house. Before you hit the road, take some time to think about safety precautions that relate to you and what you should do to prevent disaster.
