This month is lung cancer awareness month. Asbestos is one of the causes for lung cancer, next to smoking, radon gas exposure, air pollution, and genetics. A large number of people have developed lung cancer after being exposed to asbestos. It was once commonly used in construction and consumer products.
Many Americans have been exposed to asbestos at some point in their lives. Since exposure is normally limited, the majority of people will not become ill as a result. The chances of developing lung cancer or other asbestos-related diseases are much higher in people who were exposed in the workplace or during military service. It’s also common for there to be no symptoms or warning signs until decades after exposure.
Lung cancer is the most common illness related to asbestos and is also the leading cause of cancer deaths in the United States. If you or someone you know has been exposed to asbestos at some point in their life and experience the following symptoms, they may have developed lung cancer as a result.
Symptoms to look for:
· Coughing
· Chronic cough (smoker’s cough)
· Shortness of breath
· Chest pain
· Wheezing
· Hoarseness
· Unexplained weight loss
· Bone pain
· Headache
Although exposure to asbestos is significantly lower today, the Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA) and Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) continue to work to protect workers from asbestos related illnesses. Workers are now protected through regulating workplace practices, protective tools, medical exams, and air monitoring.
